On This Day In Music: R.E.M. Played Their First Gig

American rock band R.E.M. appeared live on the stage for the first time on this day in 1980 to play a gig for a friend’s birthday party. The party was held at St Mary's Episcopal Church in Athens, Georgia. The four piece formed by drummer Bill Berry, lead guitarist Peter Buck, bassist/backing vocalist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe, hadn’t been together long before playing the gig. Stipe & Co. came up with their unique name from flicking through the dictionary! They landed on Rapid Eye Movement and so the band as we know them, R.E.M. was born.

George Ezra announces “Top Secret” tour. The young English singer-song writer has been keeping a low profile since catching our attention with the release of his top 10 hit single 'Budapest'. He hasn't been resting on his laurels however. The singer announced over on Twitter today that he's been hard at work on his second record. His debut studio album Wanted on Voyage hit the #1 spot in the UK and reached #5 in the Irish album chart. Today's tweet comes with the announcement that he's to embark on a his Top Secret tour this year.

On this day in 1979, Bob Dylan caught Dire Straits’ final show at the Roxy, in Los Angeles. The British rock band had just enjoyed a lengthy residency at the West Hollywood, nightclub. This wasn’t the first time Dylan had heard their sound. His assistant and engineer, Arthur Rosato has previously played him the Dire Straits single, ‘Sultans of Swing’. The track taken for Straits debut album, was written and composed by frontman, Mark Knopfler.
