Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the eighth studio album by English rock band the Beatles. Released in June 1967, the album included songs such as "With a Little Help from My Friends", "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", and "A Day in the Life". Continuing the artistic maturation seen on the band's album Revolver (1966), Sgt. Pepper further departed from the conventional pop rock idiom of the time and incorporated balladry, psychedelic, music hall, and symphonic influences.
At the height of their fame The Beatles enraged the Roman Catholic Church by famously declaring they were bigger than Jesus. On this day in 2010, The Vatican's official newspaper L'Osservatore Ramano published a story praising The Beatles. In a move sanctioned by Pope Benedict XVI, the Catholic Church offered the Fab Four its official seal of approval, forgiving them their various excesses and even lauding them as a “precious jewel”. Paul McCartney is making a grand return to music. He is set to release his first album in four years, but no date or album title has been announced. Yet. He has been busy in the studio the last couple of months working with some of the top producers at the moment. He spoke to BBC6’s Matt Everitt about the new album and told him he has been working with Greg Kurstin.
Chuck Berry, a man who is wildly considered to be the pioneer of Rock Music, has died aged 90. Police in Missouri announced on their twitter and Facebook that Berry had been found unresponsive at his home on Saturday afternoon. They reported that they had tried and failed to revive the musician. Tributes have come pouring in for the Guitarist with many giving him his rightful dues as the master mind behind the creation of Rock Music. The New York Times described him as “Mr. Berry was its [Rock N’ Roll] master theorist and conceptual genius, the songwriter who understood what the kids wanted before they knew themselves.”
Yoko Ono and John Lennon met in London in the late sixties, and were married on this day in 1969, in Gibraltar. Their romance coincided with the disintegration of the Beatles and Lennon detailed this period in The Beatles in the track ‘The Ballad of John and Yoko’, recorded by Lennon and McCartney on April 14, 1969. Paul McCartney is famously blamed the Beatles break-up on Ono, while other members attributed it to an inability to co-operate. Newly-weds Ono and Lennon spent their honeymoon in Amsterdam campaigning for an international "Bed-In" for peace.
On the 9 February 1964 the Beatles performed on the Ed Sullivan show for what would be the beginning of the ‘British Invasion’ in America and marking a milestone in American pop culture. The Ed Sullivan Show was an American TV Variety show that ran on CBS. 1948 – 1971. Virtually every type of entertainment appeared on the show.
