Tributes are being paid to a toddler who died suddenly in Wexford after displaying flu like symptoms.

It comes as health officials prepare to give an update about the flu season which is the fifth worst in almost 20 years.

The three-year-old boy passed away in hospital on Tuesday. It’s not yet known exactly how he died but it’s understood it was sudden and he displayed flu like symptoms.

Local Councillor George Lawlor says the community is in shock.

It comes as health officials prepare to give their latest update on the flu season in the next hour but they said last week they believed it had peaked.

They also revealed 24 people had died since before Christmas from flu related illnesses. The flu season has been causing a strain on hospitals around the country.

The latest INMO figures show 507 people are waiting on trolleys nationwide. That’s 40 less when compared with the same time last week.
