Abortion Bill Passed

Abortions will be legal in Ireland from January 1st.

The Oireachtas passed all stages of the new law after a vote in the Seanad last night.

However, some doctors and hospitals have said they are unlikely to be ready to provide terminations in January.

Orla O’Connor – Director of the National Women’s Council of Ireland – says it’s a huge moment for all those who voted in the referendum in May:

“It’s a hugely historic moment for women across Ireland and for the 1.4 million people who voted to repeal the 8th amendment – finally the legislation has passed and we’re
ready to provide abortion services in January and really for families who experience such trauma and harm from the 8th amendment – this is a really historic and important moment.”
