Barcelona president Joan Laporta says they have to let Lionel Messi go, because keeping him would put the club at “risk for the next 50 years“.

The Catalan giants have been unable to agree a new contract with the Argentina star because of the Spanish league’s financial fair play rules.

Messi has now been strongly linked with Paris Saint-Germain.

The shock departure of the Argentinian superstar from the Spanish giants was announced yesterday, because giving him a new contract would have broken La Liga‘s financial fair play rules.

Laporta has said “Barca will always be above players, managers and presidents” and he couldn’t put the club’s future in jeopardy.

He outlined Barcelona’s horrendous financial predicament this morning; ”Unfortunately we have received a disastrous inheritance. The salary bill represents 110% of the club’s income. We have no salary margin. We knew it since we arrived at the club. When we arrived at the club , The numbers that had been presented after the audit, are much more than what they had told us and what we had anticipated based on the official numbers. The anticipated losses are very high, the anticipated debts are high. We have no margin wage.

Merssi’s former Barclona coach and the current boss of Manchester City Pep Guardiola has also assessed Messi’s departure to the press at this time . “It was a surprise, for me and for everyone. Laporta explained the reasons clearly today. As a fan I would love for him to have ended up at the club, I have incredible gratitude for the most extraordinary player I have ever seen.”

South American football expert Tim Vickery still expects the forward to remain in Spain….. ”The idea that Barcelona are giving this up without a fight, I’m sorry I can’t believe that. For me it makes no business sense whatsoever.”
