The Special Criminal Court has heard how former Sinn Féin councillor Jonathan Dowdall has implicated others in the Regency Hotel murder and is willing to testify at the upcoming trial.

Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch is due to stand trial today for the murder of David Byrne, who was shot dead when armed men, some of whom were dressed as Gardai, stormed a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel in Dublin six years ago.

Jonathan Dowdall was also due to stand trial for the murder of David Byrne but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge last week and is now in protective custody.

Dowdall pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of helping the gang by booking a room at the hotel was accepted last week and at his sentence hearing this morning, the judges were told he has given Gardai “material assistance beyond his own involvement“.

The court heard he has implicated others and is willing to give evidence at trial if called upon. He and his family are now in protective custody.

Jonathan’s father, Patrick, is also awaiting sentence after admitting the same charge. Their sentences will be handed down in two weeks time from now.
