The original dancefloor used by John Travolta in the film Saturday Night Fever has sold for a whopping $325,000 (€295,000) at a recent auction.
On this dancefloor, John Travolta strutted his stuff as Tony Manero in the iconic 1977 disco movie, to the soundtrack of the Bee Gees.
The multi-coloured floor which sold for $325,00, including a buyer’s premium, topped an auction run by Julien’s Auctions, and was the event’s “top selling item”.
This auction also saw Julien’s work closely with Turner Classic Movies (TCM) to set up the “Hollywood Legends: Danger, Disaster and Disco” online and live auction.
Speaking about this sale, Julien’s Auctions’ chief executive David Goodman said: “Saturday Night Fever excited the world once again in our sale of the film’s iconic dancefloor that stole the show in our exceptional Hollywood Legends auction”.
High Profile Auction
The Saturday Night Fever dancefloor used by John Travolta was not the only high profile item to go under the hammer at this high profile auction.
Among the items sold was an Ark of the Covenant protoype, which was used in the film Indiana Jones film Raiders of the Lost Ark from 1981.
This item fetched from $101,600 at the auction.
Other items on the list also include a black three-quarter evening dress, which was owned by Marilyn Monroe. It was also designed by American fashion designer Ceil Chapman, selling for $254,000.
The dress was donned by Monroe when she and baseball star Joe DiMaggio attended an event in honour of World War II veteran William F Dean in 1953.
It was hosted by comedian Bob Hope. Monroe and DiMaggio married a year later.
Other items sold at this event also included famous wands from the Harry Potter movies. These wands were used by stars Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and Ralph Fiennes across several instalments from the franchise.
The wands themselves went for between $19,050 and $25,400.
One wand used by the eponymous wizard Harry Potter played by Daniel Radcliffe, did sell for just under $16,250. It was used by Radcliffe during the 2010 movie Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part One.
Earlier this month, Diego Maradona’s Golden Ball trophy also went under the hammer, against the wishes of his heirs. More on that story here.
