Elton John has landed his first Emmy Award, meaning that he is an official EGOT (Emmy Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards) winner.
The music icon’s live stream Elton Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, came out on top on the night in the Best Variety Special category at the LA awards ceremony.
This livestream showcased Elton John during his final North American show as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which became the first show from Disney+ to receive a nod for an Emmy Award.
“It’s an honour for my Special to be recognized by the Academy. My final Dodger Stadium performance was bittersweet and an evening that I will never forget”, Elton John had originally said, reacting to his nomination.
“historic”
On the night itself, Elton John was unable to attend the ceremony to collect his award, as he recuperates from knee surgery.
Producer Ben Winston picked up the award on his behalf, and said this.
“I am not Elton John, sadly he had a knee op. He’s absolutely fine but wanted to send his love and thanks to the Television Academy for this incredible award”, Winston told the audience.
“We knew this show would be historic because it was going to be Elton’s last ever show in North America on tour. We knew it would be historic because it was Disney’s first live global stream”.
He also added, “We didn’t know it would be historic because it was going to win a man – who has created the soundtrack to our lives he’s done so much great for society who is all of our heroes. We didn’t know it would win him an EGOT”.
Overall, Elton John has won five Grammy Awards, two Academy Awards for his songs Can You Feel The Love Tonight from The Lion King and (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again from Rocketman, as well as scooping a Tony Award for Best Original Score for his musical Aida.
