Elton John’s Broadway musical has been cancelled, due to low ticket sales and poor early reviews.

The show Tammy Faye: A New Musical was based on the televangelist and had originally launched on 14 November.

It was was written by the music icon, and included lyrics written by Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears.

Despite performing well as London’s West End, the show did not fare well at its new location, with producers confirming a final curtain call on 8 December.

Elton John’s Musical Cancelled Amid Poor Reviews

According to a source, the show had failed to connect with the New York audience.

“It was always going to be difficult, even the writers feared the storyline didn’t translate for the audience,” they said. “The 1700-capacity venue was only selling 300 tickets a night. This is not exactly great for Elton”.

They mentioned poor early reviews of the musical, which “killed it”, and left those in the industry assuming that it was always “at risk of not working”.

Elton John’s Broadway musical was described as  “strangely bland”, by The New York Times, while Variety called it a “misguided West End import”.

Back in October, Disney+ dropped a trailer for the new career-spanning Elton John documentary.

This documentary looks at John’s incredible rise to fame. It will also explore the difficult periods in his life, including drug addiction, and his subsequent journey to sobriety.

“At that time, there was an emptiness within me. My soul had gone dark, I had gone dark. I wasn’t a joy to be around. I didn’t have anything apart from my success and my drugs”, Elton can be heard saying in the trailer.
