A man has been seriously injured after he received a shark bite off the coast of Cork. A Belfast man has been bitten by a blue shark while angling off the coast of Cork yesterday evening.

He sustained a serious lower arm injury. RNLI Volunteers from Crosshaven were called to the scene at 6 pm.

The boat ‘Deora De’ a deep sea angling vessel steamed its way towards Crosshaven from about eight miles off the mainland. It made its rendezvous with the Crosshaven lifeboat about four miles due south of Roches Point.

The casualty victim had been given immediate first aid assistance by the crew of the angling boat. The man was then transferred to the lifeboat where further casualty assistance was given to the swimmer on board.

The lifeboat was received at Crosshaven by an ambulance and the casualty was transported to Cork University Hospital.
