Metallica treated an audience to a special 12-song acoustic set last Saturday. That happened at the Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium in the band’s hometown of San Francisco. The low key gig took place to help the group’s All Within My Hands charity. There’s a full set list, and some of the acoustic performances, below.

As well as a number of rearranged tracks of their own included in the set, the thrash legends also played covers of Deep Purple’s “When a Blind Man Cries,” Nazareth’s “Please Don’t Judas Me, ”Bob Seger’s “Turn the Page” and Blue Oyster Cult’s “Veteran of the Psychic Wars”.
Lead singer James Hetfield said after the first song, “That sounds a little different,” “Disposable Heroes.” He also joked “I’m not nervous at all” before continuing with the rare set.

Metallica started the All Within My Hands charity program in 2017. Spaeaking to Rolling Stone in May, drummer Lars Ulrich explained the motives behind the charity.

“As someone who has been a loner for most of my life, being in the Metallica family has always given me a sense of belonging and made me feel like I was not alone.”

The drummer the charity was a good opportunity for the metal world to show compassion,

“As we all know, hard rock can sometimes, in different parts of the world, be looked down upon as a second-class member of the global music community. So we are additionally pleased that we can show everyone that hard rock and metal fans can be as compassionate and as selfless as any other people in the worldwide charitable family and the bad stigma that sometimes is hung upon them/us as somehow lesser citizens can be readdressed.”
