Morrissey has sacked his management team after Johnny Marr released a statement refuting several claims regarding The Smiths this week.

This comes after the former Smiths frontman had made previous claims about his former band and bandmate Johnny Marr, including a claim that Marr had “ignored” a huge offer to reunite The Smiths via AEG Entertainment.

Morrissey has “severed all connections”

Morrissey who allegedly agreed to this offer, had added that it would have seen The Smiths tour “throughout 2025”.

Other claims made by Morrissey include alleging that Johnny Marr had blocked a Smiths Greatest Hits album, as well as claiming that the guitarist now owns all “trademark rights and intellectual property” of The Smiths, who can go on tour without him.

However, Johnny Marr’s management have denied these claims.

In a statement, they said that Marr had contacted Morrissey in 2018, after a third party had tried to use The Smiths’ name.

But a “failure to respond” saw Marr register the trademark himself, despite an agreement with Morrissey’s lawyers that the trademark was “held for the mutual benefit” of both parties.

Marr’s management team also insisted that the musician had rejected the offer to reunite The Smiths and had not “ignored” it, which Morrissey had previously claimed. He had also rejected the Greatest Hits album “given the number already in existence”.

Following this, Morrissey released a statement via his website, announcing that he had cut all ties with his management team.

Offering no further details, he said: “Morrissey has severed all connections with Red Light Management/Pete Galli Management”.

Back in January, Morrissey had claimed that he had been “deleted” from the “essence” and history of the Smiths.

The singer stated that his contributions to the Smiths have been largely downplayed in several media reports, likening it to Mick Jagger’s contributions being deleted from Rolling Stones. More on this report from Nova here.
