Car manufacturers will no longer produce new models with CD players, it has been confirmed.

This comes after a car brand Subaru, who offered a recent car model with the system, had recently discontinued its availability.

All new models from several car brands will now be using streaming services instead.

“remarkably short sighted”

However, it would appear that not everybody is happy to see the back of the in-car CD plater, as data which was provided by the Digital Entertainment and Retail Association, shows that CD sales saw a year-on-year increase of 3.2% in the first half of this year.

The CEO of the Digital Entertainment and Retail Association, Kim Bayley had this to say regarding the recent data.

“With 15 per cent of the UK adult population reporting that they listen to CDs in their cars, this is a remarkably short-sighted move by carmakers to stop fans listening to the music they love”.

This also comes after the sale of physical music collections saw their first increase in 20 years.

The BPI and Official Charts Company had noted that physical album sales had seen a 3.2% increase in the first half of 2024, with 8,044,760 units sold.

According to reports, Taylor Swift’s album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, played a key role ins this increase, selling 254,241 copies for the first half of 2024.

The renewed interest in physical CD sales also comes following years of being overlooked by streamed content.

This also marked its first increase since 2004. More on this from Nova here.

Back in 2022, there was a strong increase in the sale of vinyl records has led to a 17% upstart in profits for the Irish arm of Universal Music from previous year.

This increase was reportedly “due to the significant resurgent growth in the popularity of vinyl records”. Check out more on this story from Nova here.
