1. Gardaí in Cork are continuing to question a man in relation to a major drug seizure. €200K worth of cannabis herb was found during a search of a house in Chapel View, Ballymakeera yesterday. A 41-year-old man is being held at Bandon Garda station.

2. Suitability will soon be more important than experience when it comes to teacher promotions. The ASTI union has welcomed a new move to help junior teachers climb the professional ladder. From now on senior roles won’t go directly to staff who’ve been working longer.

3. The number of new cars sales dropped by 10.5% last year. In contrast the number of imported private cars rose by almost 32%, the highest number on record. Almost half of all new private cars licensed in the country in 2017 were in Dublin (36.4%) and Cork (12.0%).

4. UCD has been given permission to build student accommodation blocks with space for over 2,000 beds. That’s despite objections by people including Transport Minister, Shane Ross. However, An Bord Pleanála has refused permission to construct the buildings 10 storeys high, because they would affect the view of Roebuck Castle which is a protected structure.

5. Sam Allardyce has confirmed Everton are negotiating with Arsenal to sign Theo Walcott. The Toffee boss says the 28-year-old would be a fantastic addition to his attacking options. Walcott has however struggled for game time at the Gunners of late, and has yet to start a Premier League game this season.

6. James Franco has won best actor in a comedy at the Critics Choice Awards, but didn’t appear in person to collect it. The 39-year-old has been accused of sexually inappropriate behaviour by five women. The star said earlier this week that allegations made on social media were ‘not accurate’ – but that he does support people coming forward.
