A 48 year old woman has died following a road crash in County Laois.

The crash involving two cars happened at around 10 o’clock last night on the N80 in the Ballickmoyler area, on the N80 between Carlow and Portlaoise.

The woman who was driving one of the cars was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second car, a man in his 40s was taken to Tullamore Hospital where his injuries are described as serious.

The road was closed by Gardai and local diversions are in place for an examination of the scene.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Gardai.

Meanwhile in Dublin a woman was struck by a taxi at around 1 o’clock on Leinster road in the Rathmines area. She was rushed by ambulance to St. James’ Hospital.

She remains there and the extent of her injuries aren’t known. The scene of the accident has been closed off. Diversions are in place.
