The owners of the Big Tree pub near Croke Park in Dublin want to partially demolish it.

It comes after the owners were granted planning permission for a hotel at the side of the pub last year.

Last year The Dublin Loft Company secured permission from the council to build a 163 bedroom hotel incorporating the pub.

But it’s now looking to amend that planning permission to allow it to demolish and rebuild all but the ground floor.

A structural assessment on behalf of the developers says work required to retain and refurbish the existing structure would be ‘extremely complex, with numerous risks to health and safety’.

The Irish Times reports that An Taisce and local heritage group Mountjoy Square Society has objected to it.

The council has given the developer six months to provide a revised report.
