The news of Tom Petty passing last night has shook everyone in music. In tribute, Coldplay, who were performing at the Moda Center in Portland last night, invited Peter Buck on stage to perform a cover of ‘Free Fallin’ in tribute to the late icon.

Petty, who was the lead singer of band The Heartbreakers, died last night after suffering a cardiac arrest and being rushed to hospital.

A minute’s silence was held at the show before Buck joined Coldplay on stage for the tribute. The footage has been shared on Coldplay’s twitter account. Watch below.

Tributes have flooded in from musicians across the world since the news broke last night.
The Heartbreakers were formed by Petty in 1976. Their self-titled debut album was released the same year. The breakthrough for the band came when ‘Damn The Torpedoes’, the band’s third album, was released in 1979. The band’s last album was released in 2014, called ‘Hypnotic Eye’.

Petty also co-founded the ‘Travelling Wilburys’ with Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Roy Orbison.
