Gary Murtagh (47) appeared in court charged with the murder of his brother Paul (42) last Friday at the home they shared on Auburn Street in Phibsborough, Dublin 7.
Paul’s body was found at the house on Friday afternoon. He had been the subject of a serious assault and had died from his injuries.
Detective Sergeant Enda O’Sullivan told the court that he arrested Gary Murtagh on Saturday evening at Mountjoy Garda Station. When Mr Murtagh was charged with murder he made no reply.
The house on Auburn Street is belived to have been the Murtagh family home. Both men had grown up there and Paul Murtgagh had never left, continuing to live in the house of his birth until the events of last Friday ended his life.
It’s understood that only in the last few years that Gary Murtagh had moved into the house. Neighbours say that both brothers were quiet, keeping themselves to themselves.
The court heard that one of Gary Murtagh’s hands is broken and his solicitor requested that he receive appropriate physical and mental medical care. Mr Murtagh was granted free legal aid.
It’s understood that there had been contact between the brothers and Gardaí on the day prior to the discovery of Paul Murtagh’s body. It’s believed that, on Friday, Gary Murtagh voluntarily disclosed to his solicitor that there had been a row at the house he shared with his brother before Gardaí made the grim discovery at the house.
