The governing body of women’s tennis has backed Serena Williams’ claim her treatment in the US Open final was sexist.

WTA chief executive Steve Simon says her outburst towards umpire Carlos Ramos would have been dealt with differently if she was a male player.

Williams was penalised for calling the umpire a ‘thief’ in her loss to Naomi Osaka.

She’s been fined over €14,000.
