The Taoiseach has named Simon Coveney as the new Tánaiste.

The Cork South Central TD and Leo Varadkar’s rival during the Fine Gael leadership contest emerged as a strong favourite in the last few days.

He will replace Frances Fitzgerald who resigned earlier this week. (opens in a new window)

Minister Heather Humphreys, a Cavan-Monaghan TD, will replace Ms Fitzgerald at the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation as part of the mini-reshuffle.

Mr. Varadkar noted the role she will play in Brexit preparations in her new brief and the fact she is a TD from the border area is particularly relevant.

And Mr. Varadkar promoted high profile backbench TD Josepha Madigan, of Dublin Rathdown, to take over from Ms. Humphreys at the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.
