Met Éireann has issued a status yellow rainfall warning for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal and Waterford, which comes into effect at 9pm.

It comes as Irish water is meeting this morning to discuss the potential extension of the hosepipe ban, which was due to be lifted on the 31st of July.

Thundery downpours overnight may lead to accumulations of up to 40mm, however it’s not expected to be enough to restore water supplies after the heatwave.

Liz Gavin from Met Éireann says the rain will improve soil moisture though: “So we are going to see some heavy rain at times – really from today now we are going to see heavy bands of rain pushing in from the west later on today and tonight over Leinster and Munster but we will see some improvement over the weekend.”
