Heavy rain and strong gale force winds are anticipated across most of the country as Storm Deirdre blasts in. That’s for one of the last big shopping days before Christmas.

Met Éireann identified an area of westward-moving low-pressure, Storm Deirdre last night. Deirdre carries a Status Orange wind alert for all of Ireland, with “disruptive and damaging gusts” of up 130km/h and persistent and heavy rain.

The warning will be in place between 3pm until midnight as the storm tracks northeast over Ireland today and into the evening. Motorists are being warned to exercise extreme caution on the roads today.

Rain will move into nearly all parts, with some heavy and thundery downpours at times in parts of the south and west especially and local spot flooding.

It will become very windy with dangerous squally winds in western & southern counties in the late afternoon. The severe winds will move eastwards during the evening.
