U2 are recording ‘sci-fi Irish folk music’ with Brian Eno, The Edge has revealed.

The band’s guitarist was speaking in a recent interview, as the band celebrate the 20th anniversary of their 2004 album, ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’.

Prior to this, The Edge had said that that the band have an “awful lot of material” of their next album.

“We’re working on so many different things. During the whole Covid lockdown, I just went crazy into creating tracks and song ideas. So we’re starting to go through some of those, and we’ve got an awful lot of material to wade through to see what it is”, he said.

“working on some crazy kind of sci-fi Irish folk music”

In his latest interview, The Edge was asked about what he and Bono are working on.

In response, The Edge revealed that the band have been working in the studio with producer Brian Eno on some “crazy new music”.

“Bono and I are working on some crazy kind of sci-fi Irish folk music. Which could end up becoming a part of the new U2 album. We’re not sure yet, we’ll see,” he explained.

“Part of our kind of process is to go so widely away from, off track, and the sort of the process of bringing things back on track is kind of how you get sort of unique sounding music”.

The musician also hinted that a “bunch (of) beautiful, Irish musicians” are working on the project.

“wonderful”

Elsewhere, The Edge also offered an update regarding the health of drummer Larry Mullen Jr, who had to miss the residency, following surgery.

“We’re at that great phase where we don’t have to overthink it, we’re just making music and loving that process. And then we’ll figure out where things belong afterwards so there’s a couple of different projects,” he said.

“Definitely U2, with Larry, which is wonderful. We’ve got him in the studio. He’s good, he’s taking it easy but he’s back in the saddle on the drums still doing some recording with us. And so, we’ll be doing a bit more of that before the end of the year”.

As part of their ongoing 20th anniversary celebrations, U2 confirmed plans to release their concert Vertigo: Live From Chicago on YouTube. More on this here.
