The third and final season of Squid Game will debut next year, it has been confirmed.

This was confirmed by the Korean drama’s writer, director and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk, who revealed that the show’s second season will arrive on December 26, with a third season arriving in 2025.

Squid Game has enjoyed huge success since it made its debut in 2021, which saw Seong Gi-hun played by Lee Jung-jae invited to join a game offering 45.6 billion South Korean won (around €30m).

A teaser video announcing the return of Squid Game was shared via X, with contestants on a running track falling down, with a guard saying: “It’s been three years. Do you want to play again?”. Check that out for yourselves here.

“vowed revenge”

In a letter confirming the return and final season of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk released this statement.

“Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who vowed revenge at the end of season one, returns and joins the game again”, Dong-hyuk wrote. “Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either”.

He also added: “The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale in season three, which will be brought to you next year”.

The director also said that he hoped to bring “yet another thrill ride” following the success of the show’s first run.

Squid Game was also turned into a real-life game show following its success.

The game show also re-created much of the show’s original content. However, the lethal re-imaginings of childhood games had lower stakes as contestants faced elimination instead of death.

Last December, winner Mai Whelan won the $4.45 million prize.
