China’s state-run Xinhua News recently revealed what it dubbed the world’s debut artificial intelligence (AI) news anchor. The artificial news broadcaster has generated quite a lot of criticism online among Chinese people. Many have called the new presenter “a news-reading device without a soul.”
According to Voice of America, experts say the AI anchor displays China’s short-term progress in text mining, voice recognition and semantic analysis. However, challenges remain for the country’s long-term ambition of becoming an AI superpower by 2030.
The “Artificial Intelligence Anchor” was developed by Xinhua in conjunction with Chinese search engine Sogou.com and is based on images of real, human news presenters.
