Tense Robbery, High-Speed Car Chase and Bleach-Blonde Barry - A 'CRIME 101' Review

I had the privilege of attending the Irish premiere of CRIME 101 at Point Village Odeon last night. 2 hours and 20 minutes later, I hopped on the Luas feeling all kinds of things about this unexpected thrill. If, just like me, you were assuming CRIME 101 was going to be another simple spy trope, with a good guy and a bad guy, one love-interest and a bunch of fake diamonds being thrown around, you might want to read this review - because it's much more than that (expect the fake diamonds... there's a few in the movie. Nothing wrong with a convincing counterfeit though.) Let's get into it.

The thriller starts off strong with a cold opening, American Psycho-style. The audience is teased by the main protagonist, played by the one and only Chris Hemsworth. He seems to be getting ready for some heavy duty work, exfoliating all of the dead skin off his body, scratching his scalp to get rid of any unattached hair strands. The audience will understand later on he's going the extra mile to prevent any evidence of his presence left behind on crime scenes.

The audience is then introduced to an awkward insurance provider. Sharon Coombs, portrayed by the iconic Halle Berry, is disillusioned by the immense wealth of her clients. It gets worse as we observe the way she is treated by the partners of the huge company she works for.

Finnally, we get a glimpse of the impulsive daredevil played by our very own Barry Keoghan - with bleach-blonde hair and a pink motorcycle-friendly suit, he's unmistakable. He will, however, make many a-mistakes in the movie.

Of course, we can't forget about Detective Lou, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo. The disgraced detective seems to have been chasing the '101 robber' without any luck - or any kind of lead. His superiors are as unhappy with his performance as they are rude to him. As his partner loses hope in catching the robber, Detective Lou throws a Hail Mary. Will he succeed? That's for you to see on the big screen...

One could argue the cars are characters themselves - and they play a crucial role in the storyline throughout the movie. They have something to do with the movie title, too...

Here's the full synopsis:

In the twisty, stylish crime thriller CRIME 101, Davis (Chris Hemsworth) is an elusive thief whose high-stakes heists have mystified police. He’s planning his biggest ever score — hoping it’ll be his last — when his path collides with Sharon (Halle Berry), a disillusioned insurance executive whom he’s forced to work with, and Orman (Barry Keoghan), a rival thief with far more disturbing methods than Davis's. As the multi-million dollar heist approaches, relentless detective Lt. Lubesnik (Mark Ruffalo) closes in on the operation, raising the stakes even higher, and the line between hunter and hunted starts to blur. Each of them is soon forced to confront the cost of their respective choices — and the realisation that there's no turning back. CRIME 101 is written and directed by Bart Layton (American Animals, The Imposter).

If you're looking for an old-fashioned thrill at the movie, I highly recommend CRIME 101. It's everything you want a good thriller to be - and more!

Out this Friday, 13 February, in Irish cinemas.
