Experts claim the number of people seeking help for cannabis addiction is growing. It comes as the Government is due to consider proposals to ease the laws around personal drug possession.

Senior doctors yesterday raised concerns that Ireland was “sleepwalking” into legalsiing cannabis due to misinformation and a one-sided debate on the issue. The Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan this morning has denied “sleepwalking” the issue.

The Government is due to consider proposals that will ease the laws around the possession of a small amount of drugs for personal use.

Meanwhile, The head of Addiction Services at St John of God’s Hospital, Prof. Colin O’Gara is urging the Government to look at the harmful effects cannabis can have before making any decisions.

Proposals on alternative ways to deal with the possession of drugs for personal use are due before Cabinet in the coming weeks.
