Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault which took place on Baggot Street Lower, on December 18th.

A taxi driver picked up a fare at 2.30am at the Stephens Green North rank, where the customer had requested to be taken to Stillorgan.

The passenger then became disruptive, prompting the driver to stop on the right hand side of Baggot Street, across from AIB, asking the passenger to calm.

The passenger continued to argue with the taxi driver, striking the door of the car before the driver tried to get out of the car.

As the taxi-man attempted to exit, the passenger who is deemed to be between 25 and 30-years-old, slammed the door shut and struck the driver in the face, causing serious injuries to the driver’s eye.

The man then walked along Ely Place and back toward Stephens Green East toward Earlsfort Terrace and onto Leeson Street, and may have picked up another taxi in the area.

He is described as 5’7″ or 8″ with short hair, wearing a casual jacket and shirt with a Dublin accent.

Anyone that was in the area around the time who may have seen the incident is urged to contact Gardaí – they are also appealing for drivers who may have dash-cam footage to come forward and help.

Moreover, they are further appealing to taxi drivers who were working in the area on the night, or who picked up anyone fitting the suspect offenders description, to contact authorities at Pearse Street Garda Station on 01 666 9000.
