There is a strong possibilty that crowds of up to 5,000 people may return to Ireland next month for live concerts and large scale events.

This comes as Minister for Arts Catherine Martin released more details for the planned return of music and cultural shows from next month.

Test events are expected to take place, with capacity ranging depending on the venue. These events will also include comedy gigs, outdoor concerts/theatre and classical musical recitals.

Minister Martin also added that these shows will be similar to such that were seen in Liverpool as part of the UK’s Events Research Programme.

“Across all genres”

Speaking outside the courtyard of Collins’ Barracks in Dublin where she was launching a new exibition InForm, Catherine Martin had this to say.

“I’m not going to give you the number of events, but I can tell you they’ll be across all genres, from classical music to smaller venues, to outdoor, to indoor, to comedy, to theatre”, she said.

She also added, “I’m compiling a list of a number of live events right across the country to cover a variety of music genres, from rock to classical, comedy to theatre, also indoor and outdoor”.

“The numbers will vary according to the event or the venue,” she continued. “I won’t speculate on the numbers right now because that will depend on when its presented on Thursday to the Covid subcommittee and on health advice”.

Ms Martin also said that she was “determined” to reopen a sector that has been devastated since the pandemic hit.

Live events key to “reopening” sector

“I think these live events are key to reopening for a sector that has been devastated and I want to see the doors reopen”, she said. “I want to see the doors reopen for good, and for people to be earning a living again, and all of us enjoying what we love to enjoy”.

She added that she is working closely with Sports Minister Jack Chambers on how crowds can return to music and sports events.

“Similarly with sport, Minister (Jack) Chambers and I are working on events there right now”, she said. “I would like to see some of these events in June, so it will be June and July, the sooner the better for me”.
