A 3 million euro heroin seizure in Dublin is being described as "significant" in the crackdown on organised crime gangs.

Gardaí found 21 kilos of the drug when they stopped and searched a car in Coolock in north Dublin on Friday.

Two men are still in custody today - they can be held for up to a week.

Gardaí intercepted and searched a vehicle in the area, within which the drugs were found.

The heroin was in 1kg blocks.

A 34-year-old Spanish man and a 44-year-old man from the UK were arrested and are being questioned at a garda station in north Dublin.

They are being detained under anti-gang legislation and can be held for up to a week.

Gardaí suspect the seizure could be linked to the Dublin-based organised crime group known as 'The Family' but say they are still trying to establish its origin and ownership.

The drugs have been submitted to the Forensic Science Ireland for examination.

Assistant Commissioner for Organised and Serious Crime Angela Willis said disrupting heroin trafficking "remains a central focus" of their work.

"We will continue to target the criminal organisations that operate at a global level with the intention of impacting the lives of ordinary people all over this country."
