According to new records released on Wednesday, the medical examiner determined the death to be a "homicide." The office concluded that a more thorough investigation was needed although the bodies could be released to the family.
Reports have concluded that Romy, Rob and Micheles daughter, went to check on her parents on Sunday at 3pm, when she discovered their bodies in the master bedroom of their home.
32 year old Nick Reiner, son of Rob Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first degree murder after Rob and Michele were found dead in their home on Sunday.
At a news conference on Tuesday, the LA county district alleged that Nick Reiner used a knife to kill his parents.
US publications reported that Nick Reiner made a court appearance on Wednesday. It has been reported that he wore a blue protective vest and the only words he spoke were "yes, your honour" when responding to agree to the date of his arraignment.
Nick Reiner has yet to enter a plea and it has been reported by RTE that he failed to show up to court as his lawyer stated that he had health related issues.
Although Nick Reiner is the main suspect for the murders, there is yet to be information released as to what led to this alleged act of violence. According to CNN, a source told them that Nick Reiner was seen having an argument with his father at a holiday party on Saturday night at Conan O’Brien’s Los Angeles home.
In a statement Romy and brother Jake asked for respect and privacy. "Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day, the horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no-one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends," they said.
They stated that they were "grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life".
Nick Reiner's case is scheduled for a 7 January arraignment.
Since the tragic deaths of Rob and Michelle, tributes have surged across social media platforms.
Meg Ryan posted a tribute to the late Rob Reiner who directed the iconic film that she stars in 'When Harry Met Sally'. “Oh how we will miss this man…Thank you, Rob and Michelle [sic], for the way you believe in true love, in fairy tales, and in laughter. Thank you for your faith in the best in people, and for your profound love of our country," she posted to Instagram.
"I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised… I don’t know, but my guess is that they would want that to be hopeful and humane, to be something that brings us all to a greater understanding of one another and to some peace," she continued.
Ryan's co star, Billy Crystal also paid tribute to the legendary Rob Reiner, he said: "His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” it read. “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a film-maker was a privilege but that is only part of his legacy.”
