Dave Grohl illustrated his impressive knowledge of music history in a new episode of Track Star.

The Foo Fighters lead singer appeared on the show, alongside bandmates Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett.

The show, which is aired on YouTube, plays tracks to musicians who listen to them on headphones, and they have to identify them as quickly as possible. In this episode, all three musicians came through with flying colours.

Nate Mendel was able to name The Clash from the opening strains of 'London Calling', and Buzzcocks from the track, 'Every Fallen In Love'. His bandmate, Chris Shiflett asked "are you joking" and ripped off his headphones when played Van Halen's 'Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love', as well as being able to identify 'Linoleum' from NOFX.

However, he appeared to struggle with Sonic Youth's 'Teen Age Riot'.

Elsewhere, Dave Grohl was able to figure out Minor Threat's 'Straight Edge', before stating that "these are too easy", adding: “all you need to hear is the guitars and the tone”. He also went on to mention the Melvins, Void and Harry Balfonte.

News of this comes as Foo Fighters shared a music video for their new single, 'Spit Shine' from their latest album, 'You're Favourite Toy', an album which Grohl said: “We stumbled upon it after experimenting with different sounds and dynamics for over a year, and the day it took shape I knew that we had to follow its lead. It was the fuse to the powder keg of songs we wound up recording for this record. It feels new".

"‘Your Favorite Toy’ really was the key that unlocked the tone and energetic direction of the new album".
