A councillor has said there is a "sting in the air" following Michael Healy-Rae's recent interview, where he claimed that his brother Danny cost him his managerial job.

Independent Tralee Councillor, Sam Locke also said the brothers could still rectify their issues, despite the ongoing turmoil.

This comes after Michael Healy-Rae had resigned as minister of state at the Department of Agriculture, following the much publicised acrimonious fallout from the fuel price protests in early April. The previous day, Danny Healy-Rae had said that the coalition parties ought to topple their leaders.

However, speaking to Radio Kerry, Michael Healy-Rae had said that it was not his brother's place to tell the leading parties of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael what to do.

In an interview with Radio Kerry, Cllr Lock has said that the brothers can still resolve their issues, despite this fallout.

"There is a sting there, and naturally enough, that if it happens between any two brothers, there would be a sting," he said.

"Over time, things could be rectified. Nothing is broken in the sense where families are concerned. I'm sure they will rectify their issues," he added.

The councillor did admit that he was unsure if the brothers would be able to engage in future electoral pacts like they have done in previous elections.

"People have a tendency to move on from politics. When you have enough of it, you allow somebody to move in and maybe there is an opportunity there for fresh blood to come in. I don't know," he said.

"Will Danny retire after his term? I don't know that. In some cases, people say 'right, I have enough' and move on and leave it the younger generation," Cllr Locke continued.

Cllr Locke's comments come amid growing speculation that Michael Healy-Rae and son Jackie Jr are to run a joint ticket at the next election, which would be to the detriment of Danny Healy-Rae or one of his offspring.

Jackie Healy-Rae is a councillor for Castleisland, while Danny's son and daughter, Johnny and Maura are councillors for Kenmare and Killarney respectively.

Some councillors, who have worked closely with the Healy-Rae clan, have also spoken out in support of Michael, with Independent Listowel Cllr Liam 'Speedy' Nolan saying recently: "I totally stand by Michael, if there were ten number ones to give, he would always have mine".
