Victoria Police have stated that emergency services were called to a property on Ferntree Gully Road yesterday morning following reports that a woman had been seriously injured.
The woman was treated at the scene but was later pronounced dead.
A man was arrested by officers in the surrounding area and brought into custody.
He was subsequently charged with murder and appeared before Melbourne Magistrates' Court by video link.
The court remanded him in custody, with his next appearance scheduled for 23 February 2027.
Police believe the accused and the woman were known to each other.
The circumstances surrounding the woman's death have not been fully disclosed.
Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
