The nationwide hosepipe ban has been extended until the end of September in Carlow, Cork, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Meath, Offaly, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow.

Meanwhile, the ban will be lifted on 26 August in Cavan, Clare, Donegal, Galway, Kerry, Leitrim, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath.

Uisce Éireann has said water supplies in the 13 counties where the restrictions have been extended need more time to recover following a prolonged period of hot and dry weather.

The nationwide Water Conservation Order was introduced late last month as drinking water supplies came under increased pressure.

The order applies to households and prohibits the use of hosepipes for activities including washing cars, watering gardens and filling paddling pools.

Uisce Éireann said the decision to lift the restrictions in 13 counties reflects the “positive impact of public water conservation efforts and improved conditions in many areas.”

However, the organisation warned that water supplies remain under pressure in parts of the east and south.

“In parts of the east and south, however, water sources and public water supplies remain under pressure and require continued protection,” Uisce Éireann said.

The company previously warned that the restrictions were necessary to ensure there would be enough water available for homes, businesses, farms, hospitals, vulnerable customers and other essential services.

The hosepipe ban means people cannot use a garden hose or sprinkler for a number of non-essential purposes.

Uisce Éireann has also highlighted the amount of water that can be used by garden hoses, saying that using a hose or sprinkler for just one hour can consume more water than the average family uses in an entire day.

The organisation thanked members of the public for their efforts to conserve water and protect supplies.

While the restrictions will end in 13 counties on 26 August, people living in the other areas will need to continue following the Water Conservation Order until the end of September.

Uisce Éireann said it will continue to monitor water supplies and conditions across the country.
