Archer built a successful careers in modern publishing, selling more than 300 million copies of his books around the world.
Before becoming a writer, Archer was a politician.
In 1969, Archer was elected as a Conservative MP for Louth, Lincolnshire. He later became deputy chairman of the party and was widely regarded as a prominent figure within Conservative circles.
However, his political ambitions came to a dramatic halt in 2001 when he was jailed after being found guilty of perjury and perverting the course of justice. The conviction stemmed from a libel victory he had won against the Daily Star years earlier. A court later ruled that he had fabricated evidence and encouraged a false alibi during the case.

After serving part of his four-year sentence, Archer was released in 2003 and went on to resume both his writing career and his role in the House of Lords. He eventually retired from the Lords in 2024.
HarperCollins said Archer remained committed to writing until the end and died between work sessions on his latest project. He had been scheduled to appear at the Cheltenham Literature Festival this Saturday.
Archer is survived by his wife Mary, along with their two sons and five grandchildren.
