A man was wounded by federal immigration agents inside his vehicle with a child present in Marble Hill, New York City, city officials and police confirmed.

Nationwide protests have erupted as federal immigration agents have shot at least 21 people, seven fatally, since President Donald Trump returned to office.

Opponents accuse the administration of dodging accountability as its expanded deportation effort sparks frequent violence, RTE has

In response, Trump continues to justify the crackdown, broadly accusing migrants of committing financial fraud and violent crimes.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement: "Early reports indicate agents surrounded (the man) and a five-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. I have been on the phone with President Trump and (Homeland Security) Secretary Mullin, negotiating the release of ‌the man ICE agents shot. Those negotiations were unsuccessful," Mr Mamdani said in a press conference yesterday evening."

"These actions are making the city less safe. This city wants ICE out. We want ICE out of our city, ICE out of our schools, ICE out of our hospitals, ICE out of our streets, ICE away from our kids," Mamdani's statement continued, as quoted by RTE.

According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and city officials, the child inside the vehicle was uninjured and has been safely reunited with family.

The Department of Homeland Security stated that ICE agents were carrying out a targeted operation in the Bronx to apprehend a 28-year-old Dominican national with a criminal record, whom police confirmed was previously arrested in New York City in 2023 and 2025.

According to a DHS statement, an ICE officer opened fire during the operation, injuring the suspect whom federal officials described as an undocumented individual with a criminal record.

DHS stated that officers delivered immediate first aid before the man was taken to a local hospital around 4:00 p.m (9pm Irish Time).

Pedro Almarez, who works nearby, recounted hearing gunshots and seeing multiple ICE officers and vehicles at the scene, noting that NYPD arrived about ten minutes later and the injured driver was not removed from his vehicle until emergency medical personnel arrived.
