The decision comes after figures were released outlining the number of life threatening injuries caused by illegal e-scooters.
The main concern is that some e-scooters can travel at speeds far above Ireland's legal maximum of 20 km/h for use on public roads.
The government is also considering stricter measures, including the possibility of banning e-scooters altogether, following several serious accidents. Some of these incidents have resulted in children suffering severe traumatic brain injuries.
Children's Health Ireland recently reported a 50% increase in brain injury cases among children and teenagers linked to the growing popularity of e-scooters.
Fine Gael TD Michael Murphy, who chairs the Oireachtas Transport Committee, welcomed Amazon's decision to withdraw a foldable e-scooter from its Irish website. He also confirmed that the company is carrying out an internal investigation into the product.
Irish legislation requires e-scooter riders to be at least 16 years old, and the vehicles must not have a design speed exceeding 20 km/h when used on public roads.
Murphy noted that AliExpress has also removed a non-compliant e-scooter from sale in Ireland but argued that more retailers need to act. He criticised the continued sale of models advertised with speeds of up to 45 km/h, with some reportedly being promoted for children as young as six years old.
He called on businesses to prioritise public safety over profits, stressing that protecting children should come before commercial interests.
Meanwhile, senior government figures, including Tánaiste Simon Harris, the Taoiseach, relevant ministers, and the Garda Commissioner, are expected to meet next week to discuss concerns surrounding e-scooter safety and possible future regulation
