A community football tournament in support of Eímear Byrne’s life-saving surgery fund will take place this July as the people of Arklow continue their remarkable fundraising efforts.
The event, organised by Eímear’s cousin, 19-year-old Darragh Kennedy, is set to be held at Travers Insurance Park on July 4 in partnership with Arklow Town FC. The fundraiser follows Darragh’s recent challenge of running 5km every day throughout May to raise both awareness and vital funds for Eímear’s urgent medical treatment.
Although the final schedule has yet to be confirmed, organisers expect the tournament to get underway sometime between 10am and 12pm. The day will feature a World Cup-style football competition, with teams battling through semi-finals before the winners progress to the final.
Speaking about preparations for the event, Darragh said the level of support from the public has been overwhelming and has already exceeded expectations. Interest in taking part has been so strong that organisers may need to expand the tournament format.
“We originally planned to limit the event to around 60 players, but we’ve already gone beyond that number,” Darragh explained. “At this stage, I think we could end up having six or even eight teams involved.”
The tournament is being designed as a family-friendly community day, with plenty of entertainment both on and off the pitch. Visitors can enjoy a barbecue, music, face painting, refreshments and a welcoming atmosphere throughout the day.
A raffle will also be held later that evening in the town, with a number of local businesses generously contributing prizes and sponsorship. Among those supporting the initiative are Burger Hill and The Royal Hotel.
The football tournament is part of the wider campaign to raise €600,000 for Eímear’s urgent heart surgery in the United States. The community fundraising effort has gained significant momentum since launching on April 9 and has already generated more than €540,000 towards the target.
With the goal now within reach, Darragh emphasised the importance of maintaining support and fundraising momentum in the weeks ahead. He said the response from people across Arklow and beyond has been inspiring and demonstrates the strength of the community’s commitment to helping Eímear access the treatment she urgently needs.
