Bank of Ireland is to close 88 branches in the Republic of Ireland and 15 in Northern Ireland its announced today.
With the rapid uptake of alternatives to traditional banking, the bank says it is in response "to the acceleration in the uptake of digital banking."
The Bank has also agreed a new partnership with An Post which lets personal and business customers use their local post office for a range of services – including to withdraw cash and make cash and cheque lodgements
The bank closures due to come into effect before the end of September. Staff will be relocated with no compulsory redundancies.
The list of branches to close in Dublin are as follows:

- Phibsborough
- Ballycoolin
- Killester
- Merrion Road
- Rathmines
- Ballyfermot
Kildare:
- Celbridge
- Kilcullen
- Leixlip - HP/Intel
- Monasterevin
Wicklow:
- Carnew
- Rathdrum
- Tinahely
Meath:
- Athboy
- Enfield
- Ratoath
It follows Ulster Bank's decision to wind down its operations in Ireland over the next number of years.
John O'Connell from the Financial Services Union described the decision as 'shameful
' and an act of betrayal to loyal staff and customers.
He claims the timing is inappropriate, due to the pandemic, saying the news will come as a shock to both staff and customers.
