The victim of last week's stabbing in Belfast, is out of an induced coma, but may still lose sight in his right eye, his family have said in a statement.
The victim, Stephen Ogilvie was attacked at Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast, which caused him to lose his left eye, and suffer deep cuts to his head, face and back.
Hadi Alodid, a Sudanese national charged over this attack, appeared before Belfast Magistrate's Court, facing charges of attempted murder over the incident. Mr Alodid had entered Northern Ireland across the border via bus in February 2023.
Prior to this, he had flown to Dublin from Paris. He was then granted leave to remain in the UK until 2028, having claimed asylum upon arrival.
Mr Alodid is next due to appear in court via video-link on July 8. He has been remanded in custody until that date.
Speaking about this, Stephen Ogilvie's family thanked people for their kindness and generosity at this difficult time, but have said that he faces some "significant challenges ahead", despite their relief that he is out of the induced coma.
According to his family, these "significant challenges ahead", include the possibility that Mr Ogilive may lose the sight in his right eye.
In a statement, they said: "We have been truly humbled by the kindness of so many people, many of whom have never met our family".
This incident led to major anti-immigration protests in the streets of Belfast last week, which saw homes, cars and a bus set fire to, with people also targeted due to their race. At the time of writing, 35 arrests had been made, with 23 people charges following this disorder.
