Bruce Springsteen has once again used his platform to deliver a blistering political message, taking aim at ICE and the Trump administration during a surprise appearance at a benefit concert in New Jersey over the weekend.
The 76-year-old musician made an unannounced return to the stage at the Light of Day Winterfest on January 17, performing at the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, New Jersey. The annual charity event raises funds for research into Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions, a cause close to Springsteen’s heart given his long-standing involvement with the organisation.
Before launching into his 1978 classic “The Promised Land”, Springsteen addressed the audience with a lengthy and emotional speech, framing the song within the current political climate in the United States.

“I wrote this song as an ode to American possibility,” he said. “Right now we are living through incredibly critical times. The United States, the ideals and the values for which it stood for the past 250 years, is being tested like it has never been in modern times. Those values and those ideals have never been as endangered as they are right now.”
Springsteen went on to explicitly criticise the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, referencing recent events in Minneapolis that have sparked protests and national outrage.
“If you believe in the power of law and that no one stands above it, if you stand against heavily-armed masked federal troops invading an American city, using gestapo tactics against our fellow citizens, if you believe you don’t deserve to be murdered for exercising your American right to protest, then send a message to this president, as the mayor of the city said: ICE should get the f—k out of Minneapolis,” he told the crowd.
He dedicated the performance to “the memory of the mother of three and an American citizen, Renee Good.”
Good, 37, was fatally shot earlier this month during an ICE operation in Minneapolis. According to the US Department of Homeland Security, officers claimed she attempted to drive her vehicle into an agent before shots were fired. Footage of the incident and conflicting accounts have fuelled protests across the city, with Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey publicly calling for federal agents to withdraw.
“This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed,” Frey said in the aftermath.
Springsteen’s comments echo a growing backlash from artists and public figures. Musicians including Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews and Duran Duran have also spoken out against ICE in recent weeks, as demonstrations continue in Minnesota.
This is far from the first time Springsteen has positioned himself in direct opposition to Donald Trump. A long-time critic of the former president, he has repeatedly spoken about economic inequality, immigration policy and the erosion of democratic norms in the US. In a June 2025 interview, he described Trump’s rise as the result of deep social and economic fractures.

“It’s an American tragedy,” he said. “I think that it was the combination of the deindustrialisation of the country and then the incredible increase in wealth disparity that left so many people behind. It was ripe for a demagogue.
Bruce Springsteen has launched a scathing attack on US President Donald Trump's administration, which he called "treasonous".
The Boss heavily criticised the president, while on stage at Manchester's Co-Up Live, on the opening night of a UK and European Tour, which will run until July. Springsteen will of course be playing these shows with the E Street Band.
Whilst on stage, Springsteen blasted the "corruption" and "incompetence" of the Trump administration in a series of rants during the gig.
At the start, Bruce Springsteen kicked things off with a live rendition of 'Land of Hope and Dreams', telling the audience: “It’s great to be in Manchester and back in the UK. Welcome to the Land of Hope and Dreams Tour! The mighty E St. Band is here tonight to call upon the righteous power of art, of music, of rock ‘n roll in dangerous times".
Springsteen continued: “In my home, the America I love, the America I’ve written about, that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous administration. Tonight, we ask all who believe in democracy and the best of our American experiment to rise with us, raise your voices against authoritarianism and let freedom ring!".
