The Dáil has rejected the oppositions proposal to stop the Ireland-Israel matches.

Ireland's men's soccer team is due to play Israel in the Uefa Nations League on 27 September at a neutral venue.

The motions to stop the game and seek a ban on Israel partaking in all international sports was proposed by Sinn Fein and the Social Democrats and were debated in Dáil Éireann on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It has been reported that ministers proposed amendments to the motions and said that the government had no say in the fixture and the decision is up to the Football Association of Ireland.

The house supported the amendments by 81 votes to 68 votes.

Sinn Féin spokesperson for sport, Joanna Byrne said that they "cannot sit on the sidelines" and that “anybody who says there is no place for politics in sport neither understands politics nor sport." Byrne then explained the significant impact Palestine's sport has faced due to Israel's war on Gaza.

Social Democrats TD Sinéad Gibney used her time to state that the decision to exclude Israel from would support Irish sporting bodies and that "we cannot stand alongside Israel in a sporting fixture of this nature".

Gibney continued to state that this is their chance to stand up and "say we will distance ourselves from Israel."

RTE reports that the government insisted that the matches are a matter for the FAI.

Minister for Sport Charlie McConalogue confirmed that there had been contact with footballing authorities in Norway, Israel and Palestine as they determine whether or not the game should go ahead. McConalogue stated that the FAI had discussed security implications with An Garda Síochána.

The FAI board directors are expected to meet on Thursday to make a decision to move the game to a neutral venue. The match was due to be played in Dublin's Aviva stadium, however, it is likely it will be moved to a stadium in Hungary.

The game is set to take place on October 4th.
