Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for twelve counties today, warning of scattered thunderstorms that could bring spot flooding and lightning damage.
The alert, which came into effect at 11am, will remain in place until 8pm this evening.
The counties affected are: Carlow, Clare, Galway, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Offaly, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford, and Wicklow.
According to the national forecaster, showers developing across the southern half of the country this morning are expected to become more widespread and intense throughout the afternoon, with the potential for heavy downpours and thunderstorms.
Elsewhere, light rain or drizzle is set to develop in the southwest later in the day, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 20 degrees.
Tonight, heavy showers will persist in some areas, especially over the southern half of the country, before gradually clearing. Patchy rain and drizzle will also continue into the evening before most areas become dry with some clear spells overnight. Mist and fog are likely to form in places.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, any remaining mist, fog or patchy rain in the southeast will clear to give a mostly dry and sunny day, though the south may still see the odd shower. Temperatures will climb to between 17 and 22 degrees, though it will be slightly cooler near northern coastal areas.
