Elvis Costello is not a fan of Oasis, calling the band a "simplification of the La's".

The singer/songwriter made these comments in a recent interview with the Liverpool Echo, where he discussed the difference between musicians from Merseyside and Manchester.

Speaking to the outlet, Costello said: “This is probably an heretical thing to say to Mancunians, but I think that Oasis are a simplification of the La’s".

“There was a purity to [The La’s frontman] Lee [Mavers’] songs and the whole attitude of that. [Oasis] is much more ruthless, and undoubtedly effective, so I’m not going to knock it".

The Oliver's Army singer continued: “It’s not for me, never has been. Sometimes that happens. Someone has a good idea and someone takes that idea and turns it into something that communicates to more people. If they’re happy with it then that’s great".

Costello went on to state that he “can’t really understand Mancunians” either, saying: “They could be saying something nice, or they could be insulting me, I don’t speak that language. I just can’t understand anything they’re saying. Newcastle, I can, weirdly enough. I can tune that one in".

The singer also told the Liverpool Echo that there are “lots of unacknowledged people in music”, before adding: “I’ve had tremendous good fortune so I’m not going to say anything about that. If somebody has the opportunity, they should take the moment and they’re not [going] to harm anybody that I can tell".

Speaking of Oasis, guitarist, Noel Gallagher ruled out watching Chris Martin's curated World Cup half time show.

Gallagher discussed the topic in a recent chat with Talksport, which will see Chris Martin curate a half time show at the final of this Summer's FIFA World Cup, which will feature a number of artists including, Madonna, Burna Boy and Shakira.

Admitting that he does not particularly care for the show in general, he said: “I don’t like changes in football. I’m looking forward to these new rules about corners and time-wasting, that might be a good thing for the game, but I don’t like the razzmatazz of football; it’s been functioning perfectly for hundreds of years".

“They’re not really football people who are performing anyway, are they?", he added.
