Leinster and Ireland winger James Lowe has announced that he will leave Leinster at the conclusion of the current season, bringing an end to a remarkable nine-year journey in Irish rugby.
The 33-year-old confirmed the news through an emotional Instagram post, following weeks of speculation surrounding his future. Reports had suggested that contract discussions with Leinster had failed to produce an agreement, while Lowe has been heavily linked with a move to Japanese club Suntory Sungoliath.
Reflecting on his time in Ireland, Lowe described the country as much more than a workplace, calling it home for both himself and his family.
“Ireland has shaped not only my career but also our lives as a family,” he wrote. “The friendships we have made here will stay with us forever.”
Lowe arrived in Ireland in late 2017 after leaving New Zealand Super Rugby side the Chiefs. What followed was a hugely successful spell with Leinster, where he became one of the province’s most influential players. He has scored 71 tries in 101 appearances, recently surpassing Shane Horgan to become Leinster’s all-time leading try scorer.
During his time with the province, Lowe won the Investec Champions Cup in his debut season and helped Leinster secure five URC/PRO14 titles. He now has the opportunity to add another trophy before departing, with Leinster preparing to face the Bulls in the URC Grand Final at Croke Park.
Having qualified to represent Ireland in 2020, Lowe went on to earn 45 international caps and score 17 tries. He played a key role in Ireland’s recent success under Andy Farrell, contributing to two Six Nations triumphs, including a Grand Slam-winning campaign. He also featured prominently during the 2023 Rugby World Cup and represented the British and Irish Lions on their tour of Australia.
His move abroad is expected to bring his Ireland career to a close, given the IRFU’s long-standing preference for selecting players based in Ireland. Lowe’s final international appearance came during Ireland’s Six Nations victory over England earlier this year, a match in which he suffered a groin injury.
In his farewell message, Lowe thanked Leinster Rugby and Irish supporters for the opportunities he received throughout his career.
“Representing Ireland was the greatest honour of my life,” he said. “Every time I wore the jersey, I felt immense pride. Leaving is a decision made with a heavy heart, but I will always be grateful for everything Irish rugby has given me.”
