The country has a new Taoiseach this afternoon.

Simon Harris has become the third person to hold the top office since the last General Election in 2020.

At 37 years of age, he is the youngest Taoiseach in the history of the state.

Mr Harris takes the mantle from the man who previously held that title.

Leo Varadkar, the outgoing Fine Gael leader told the Dáil he knows Simon Harris “will rise to the occasion.”

Mr Varadkar bows out saying it has been the most fulfilling and rewarding time of his life.

In the Dáil vote, his ratification was passed with 88 deputies in favour and 69 against.

After the vote was announced at Leinster House, Simon Harris promised to be a Taoiseach for everyone.

“I will work with you and for you, and for the country that I know we all love. I will be a Taoiseach who will listen.” Mr Harris said in the Dáil.

“The Irish story is a story of hope, a spirit of optimism sustained us in the darkest of days.

“And today, once again, we must ensure it lights our way forward.

“Let us not make the mistake of giving into pessimism and despair about our future.”

After the road was paved for the Greystones TD to lead the country some weeks ago, he used the song lyric from Bachman – Turner Overdrive….You aint seen nothing yet.

In the Dail, while hitting out at Government, People before Profit’s Mick Barry used a classic WHO song to describe what he feels is the current situation.

“The WHO You wont get fooled again from 1971 – It might sum up the mood of the electorate a little better, but it does include the lyric, meet the new boss, same as the old boss.”
