David Bowie spent a lifetime turning raw emotion into art. In the end, he did the same with a simple birthday card.

On July 25th, 2025, Iman marked her 70th birthday with a post that quietly floored anyone paying attention. Not with a spotlight-grabbing anecdote or glossy retrospective—no, she posted a photo of the final handwritten card she received from her husband, the Starman himself, David Bowie.

It reads, in that unmistakable, half-elegant, half-chaotic Bowie scrawl:

“Happy birthday darling!! 60 years. It’s been a privalige to have shared over a third of these with you. I love you! — David, hubby xxx”

It’s devastating in its simplicity. No grand declarations. No theatricality. Just love, sealed in ink six months before Bowie’s death from liver cancer in January 2016. The world didn’t know he was ill. Iman did. And now, in one painfully intimate image, we all do too.

The pair had been together since a blind date in 1990, arranged by hairdresser Teddy Antolin, and married in 1992. They were intensely private. And it was that very privacy that became their sanctuary… until it couldn’t be anymore.

“We lived a very private life and suddenly it felt like there was a target on mine and my daughter’s head,” Iman told Vogue in 2022, referring to the tsunami of grief, media pressure, and public pilgrimage that followed Bowie’s death. “There was a point where it was like: ‘Okay, go home now.’”

But grief doesn’t go home. It lingers. And so does love.

Iman has refused to refer to Bowie as her “late husband.” “He is my husband,” she insisted. It’s not defiance. It’s devotion. A clear-eyed commitment to memory, rather than mythology.

Their daughter, Lexi, now 24, is beginning her own artistic chapter, actively working to carve a creative identity that’s hers alone. Not her father’s echo. Not a continuation. Her own voice.

Yet in that final card, where a global icon clumsily spells “privilege” wrong, lies the truth of Bowie and Iman’s bond: one not for show, but for keeps.

Sometimes the loudest love stories are whispered.
