Employees at Meta’s Irish operations have begun receiving notifications outlining how they may be affected by the company’s latest global redundancy programme, which will see approximately 8,000 jobs cut worldwide.
The reductions represent around 10% of Meta’s global workforce, as the technology giant accelerates investment in artificial intelligence and restructures teams around AI-focused operations.
It remains unclear how many positions in Ireland could ultimately be impacted. Meta currently employs around 1,800 people across its Irish business.
Sources indicated that some Irish-based employees received emails early this morning informing them they were potentially affected by the cuts.
Meta has also filed a collective redundancy notification with Ireland’s Department of Enterprise, a legal requirement when companies plan to make 30 or more employees redundant.
The company first signalled the job reductions last month through an internal memo to staff, which also revealed plans to halt recruitment for thousands of previously approved vacancies.
According to reports from Reuters, the latest redundancies form part of a broader organisational overhaul designed to streamline the company’s AI operations and internal workflows.
In a memo circulated to employees earlier this week, Meta’s Chief People Officer Janelle Gale said the company intends to reassign around 7,000 workers to AI-related projects while simultaneously reducing layers of management.
The restructuring comes amid a major expansion in Meta’s spending on artificial intelligence technologies.
Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has previously indicated that AI would significantly reshape the company’s operations during 2026.
“We’re starting to see projects that used to require big teams now be accomplished by a single very talented person,” Mr Zuckerberg said earlier this year.
He also described plans to invest heavily in AI-driven tools while “flattening teams” across the organisation.
Concerns about AI-driven job losses had already surfaced within Meta’s Irish operations in recent months. In March, it emerged that 15 Irish-based roles were under threat due to increased automation and the adoption of AI technologies.
The latest announcement follows several previous rounds of redundancies at Meta in Ireland. In January last year, the company confirmed plans to cut approximately 5% of its global workforce, targeting what it described as its “lowest performing” employees.
Meta had already eliminated roughly 840 Irish jobs during separate redundancy rounds carried out in November 2022 and May 2023.
