It’s safe to say James Hetfield didn’t opt for the traditional proposal.
The Metallica frontman has announced his engagement to partner Adriana Gillett, and the setting for the moment was not a candlelit dinner or a quiet beach. Instead, it happened underwater, surrounded by some of the largest creatures in the ocean.
Yes, really.
Hetfield shared the news through Metallica’s official Instagram account, posting a photograph that captures the moment the proposal took place. In the image, both Hetfield and Gillett are wearing snorkelling masks while swimming beneath the surface alongside whale sharks. Hetfield holds up a sign reading, "Adriana Gillett, will you marry me?", while Gillett responds with a clear thumbs-up, which, in this context, seems to translate fairly definitively to yes.
Gillett later shared the same image herself, offering a glimpse into just how unexpected the moment was.
She wrote: "The best birthday trip surprise. Swimming with whale sharks on Friday the 13th with the most unique, special, and romantic proposal a Pisces could ever imagine. In a sea full of fish, we caught each other. Thank you, God, for putting us together."
It’s the sort of proposal that feels perfectly designed for a story, unusual enough to stand out, but personal enough to clearly mean something to the couple themselves.
For context, whale sharks are not just another marine animal drifting past in the background. They are the largest fish species currently known to exist, capable of reaching lengths of up to 18 metres. Despite their immense size, they are gentle filter feeders and are considered one of the ocean’s most peaceful giants.
They are also endangered. Current estimates suggest somewhere between 130,000 and 200,000 whale sharks inhabit the world’s oceans.
Which means that, even by celebrity standards, this was a pretty extraordinary backdrop for a life-changing moment.
Hetfield’s engagement comes several years after a major shift in his personal life. In 2022, the Metallica vocalist filed for divorce from his wife Francesca Tomasi, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple had been married since 1997 and share three children together.
Publicly, Hetfield was first linked to Gillett in 2023. Gillett, a journalist-turned fashion designer, has largely kept the relationship out of the spotlight, which perhaps makes this very public proposal all the more striking.
Meanwhile, professionally, Metallica remain as busy as ever.
Late last month the band announced an ambitious Las Vegas residency at the Sphere venue. The run, titled Life Burns Faster, will span 24 shows and stretch from October 2026 through to March 2027, marking another major live chapter for a band that has spent more than four decades at the top of heavy music.
But before the lights of Las Vegas switch on, Hetfield clearly has another milestone to celebrate.
And if nothing else, this proposal proves one thing: sometimes the most memorable moments happen far away from dry land.
